Oil company INA generated slightly more than half of the overall profit of all 19 public companies, namely 892 million kuna. It was followed by power company HEP, which posted a profit of 441 million kuna, and insurance company Croatia Osiguranje, which reported a profit of 130 million kuna.
The Hrvatske Zeljeznice rail company had operated at a profit for the first time in the last 15 years, ending 2005 with a profit of 50 million kuna as opposed to a loss of 180 million kuna in 2004.
According to the report, three public enterprises operated at a loss in 2005 - national carrier Croatia Airlines (22.8 million kuna), newspaper publisher Vjesnik (19.5 million) and Plovput, the company in charge of maritime navigation safety, (3.6 million).
The state companies received 2.9 billion kuna in all in subsidies and grants, which was 23 per cent less than in 2004.
The highest net monthly salary was paid in Croatia Osiguranje, in the amount of 41,865 kuna, and the lowest in the Hrvatske Sume forest management company, 1,668 kuna.
The overall investments of the public enterprises amounted to 19.5 billion kuna last year.
