Speaking to the press after meeting his Croatian counterpart Gordan Jandrokovic, Zalewski said Polish surveys showed that 72 per cent of Poles advocated Croatia's entry into the European Union.
Commenting on the EU's constitutional crisis and the possibility of delays in Croatia's accession, Zalewski said Croatia must not be a hostage to the Union's institutional crisis.
In that case we would advocate adopting a new framework for Croatia's swift accession which should be based on the Nice Treaty, he said.
"Poland has given us full support and offered its experiences and views on how to negotiate with Brussels in the best possible way," said Jandrokovic.
Zalewski said that despite Poland's own tough EU entry negotiations, Poles had been in favour of their country's accession and that the support continued to grow.
After two years of membership, the consequences of integration are so positive that currently 82 per cent of Poles are pleased that we are a member of the Union, he said.
Zalewski also said that Poland maintained very good relations with the US. We are aware that EU-US cooperation is crucial for foreign affairs. We feel that their cooperation is also necessary in relation to east Europe and Russia. Together we are stronger and can achieve the common goals more easily, he said.
