In its decision granting Covic's release, the court said that cash can also be deposited instead of property. Should Covic's defence attorneys meet all conditions for his release, he will have to turn in all of his travel documents and report to the Mostar police once a day. He will be banned from leaving Bosnia until the end of the proceedings, the court said.
Commenting on the court's decision, Covic's Mostar attorney Josip Muselimovic told Hina that the procedure which the State Court requested concerning the bail would be completed at the start of next week, which means that Covic will be released from custody in the first half of next week.
Today's decision of the State Court of Bosnia-Herzegovina to release the Bosnian Croat politician from custody came after twelve of his friends offered their apartments as a guarantee that Covic will not flee. The State Court of Bosnia-Herzegovina has recently found Covic guilty of abuse of office in the so-called Lijanovic case and sentenced him to five years in prison pending appeal.
The court rejected a defence motion for provisional release pending the announcement of a final judgement, citing as the reason the risk of Covic escaping.
