HRT council: broadcasting of speech not in contravention of public broadcaster's role

ZAGREB, Dec 12 (Hina) - The Croatian Radio and Television (HRT) Programmes Council has concluded that the broadcasting of a report with excerpts of a speech by President Stjepan Mesic in the Dnevnik prime-time evening news programme on Saturday was not in contravention of the HRT's role as a public broadcaster.

During its five-hour session on Tuesday, the council did not vote on the proposal that the television news department's chief editor reconsider the decision under which anchorman Danko Druzijanic and editor Goran Rotim cannot host and edit Dnevnik until the completion of the procedure establishing their responsibility.

HRT director-general Mirko Galic firmly abided by his position that the said editors prepared and presented the report in an unprofessional fashion.

He explained that nobody said that it had been a mistake to broadcast the report with Mesic's speech but it was inadmissible to broadcast such sensitive information, which he said might have been a set-up, without previous consultations.

Druzijanic admitted that their only omission was that they failed to notify the news department's chief editor about the report, but they had not enough time to do so.

Rotim ironically commented that they were guilty as they released the news. He, however, admitted that the report was technically deficient.

The HRT Ethics Commission was due to give its opinion on the case on Wednesday.
