ZAGREB, Dec 7 (Hina) - The parliamentary clubs of deputies on Thursday supported a draft decision on the participation of Croatian troops in the ISAF peace mission in Afghanistan under which the number of soldiers will go up from the current 148 to 200 in 2007 and to 300 in 2008.

Prior to that, Defence Minister Berislav Roncevic submitted a report on the participation of Croatian troops in ISAF from March 1 to October 31, 2006, stressing that their function was to support the provision of peace.

They may engage in combat only in self-defence and have not breached their authority so far, said Roncevic, adding that the costs of their participation in the mission in the said period amounted to 47.4 million kuna.

The deputies today also considered a draft decision on the holding of exercises of Croatian and other countries' troops in 2007 and on the participation of Croatian troops in the NATO operation Active Endeavour. Five Croatian liaison officers will stay at the Allied Naval Forces South HQ in Naples.
