DUBROVNIK, Dec 6 (Hina) - Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader, who
on Wednesday attended a ceremony in the southern city of Dubrovnik marking St.
Nicholas' Day and the day of local war veterans, said that citizens of the
present-day Croatia should respect institutions for which many gave their lives
defending the country. In this context, he recalled that the death
toll in the Homeland Defence War was over 15,000 people and that 35,000 people
were left disabled.
Sanader stressed that nobody would dare harm the dignity of war
veterans anymore and that the law regulating their rights would no longer be
changed.
During the ceremony in the Marin Drzic theatre, the PM left the event
for a short period of time. After returning to the theatre hall, he said that
he had had a telephone conversation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel as
previously arranged.
