This is five months more than what the prosecution asked in its motion.
Cucic was found guilty of having abused, physically attacked and beaten his wife Megali Boers on a daily basis from March 2001 to May 2003 in Zagreb and Brussels. Mrs. Boers was exposed to beatings even when she was pregnant, which was why she had to seek medical assistance and police protection.
Judge Marko Bencic said aggravating circumstances in this case were the fact that Cucic had abused his wife for a long time and that he, who represented Croatia, should have set a positive model to others.
This non-final verdict is subjected to appeals.
