Glavas's lawyer also to request suspension of second war crimes probe

OSIJEK, Dec 3 (Hina) - A lawyer representing member of Parliament Branimir Glavas announced on Sunday he would file a request on Monday for suspension of a war crimes investigation that was being conducted against his client in Osijek.
OSIJEK, Dec 3 (Hina) - A lawyer representing member of Parliament Branimir Glavas announced on Sunday he would file a request on Monday for suspension of a war crimes investigation that was being conducted against his client in Osijek.

The announcement came the day after a Zagreb County Court investigating judge suspended another war crimes probe against Glavas on account of his deteriorated health and ordered his release from custody.

"Now that the proceedings in the so-called Garage Case have been suspended and Glavas has been released from detention because of his seriously deteriorated health, there is no reason not to suspend the investigation in the Osijek case as well," lawyer Marko Dumancic told reporters in Osijek.

In the Garage Case, Glavas is suspected of ordering the torture and murder of two Serb civilians from Osijek and the torture of another three in 1991.

He is also one of the suspects in the so-called Sellotape Case, referring to the murder of Serb civilians by the Drava river in Osijek in the winter of 1991/92. The investigation into this case was formally launched on October 30 following an order by Osijek County Court investigating judge Mario Kovac.

After 37 days of a hunger strike, Glavas was released from a prison hospital in Zagreb on Saturday and transferred in a serious condition to the intensive care unit of the Osijek Clinical Hospital where he was subjected to further medical examinations.

"Glavas's health has seriously deteriorated," said Dr Vladimir Sisljagic, who was on duty in the hospital when Glavas was admitted on Saturday evening. Sisljagic is also a member of Glavas's HDSSB party in the national parliament.

Many representatives of war veterans' associations and residents of Osijek today expressed their support for Glavas.
