Prospects of Rijeka to host Mediterranean Games in 2013 seem excellent

RIJEKA, Nov 22 (Hina) - The Croatian coastal city of Rijeka has all arguments for being selected as the host of the Mediterranean Games in 2013, said Jacques Grospeillet, the chairman of the Evaluation Commission in charge of choosing the best candidacies for the organisation of the multi-sport games held every four years for nations bordering the Mediterranean Sea.

Grospeillet said this at a news conference in Rijeka on Wednesday afternoon at the end of a three-day visit to the biggest Croatian seaport.

Mayor Vojko Obersnel told the press that this was the fourth time Rijeka was applying for the organisation of the Mediterranean Games.

The five-member commission of the International Committee of the Mediterranean Games toured Rijeka and its surroundings to see sports facilities and infrastructure in that part of Croatia.

The other two candidates for the organisation of the 2013 Games are Mersin, Turkey, and Volos, Greece.

The decision on the Games' host will be made in November 2007.

The Mediterranean Games were first held in 1951. From 1991 on, they were held the year following the Olympic Games.
