ZAGREB, Nov 18(Hina) - Croats are the fattest people in Europe but are also among the tallest, according to the latest Eurobarometer Health, Food and Nutrition survey.

The average Croat weighs 76.3 kg, while the European average is 72.2 kg. The Danes weigh 75.9 kg on average, the Dutch 75.8 kg, and Luxembourg's citizens 75.6 kg.

On the other hand, the average Italian weighs 68.7 kg, the average Portuguese 69 kg and the average French 69.7 kg.

The people of Croatia and Luxembourg also have the highest body mass index, while the French and the Italians have the lowest.

The Croats are aware that being overweight is a health threat, with 73 per cent fully agreeing with this assumption and 22 per cent mainly agreeing.

Despite being fat, the majority of Croats feel they are in good health. They also have a better opinion of their eating habits that the citizens of Turkey, Bulgaria and Romania. The latter two are about to join the European Union, while Croatia and Turkey are accession candidates.

Croatia is also at the top of the list when it comes to people not engaging in any sports or recreational activity. As many as 59 per cent of Croats fall into this category, whereas nearly two-thirds of the people in the European Union regularly engage in sports.

The survey also showed that the Croats are taller than the European average, 171.1 cm as against 169.9 cm, and are taller than the citizens of Turkey, Bulgaria and Romania.

The tallest people live in northern Europe, with the Dutch at the top of the list with an average height of 174.5 cm.
