The list covers 90 per cent of the world's population. Sweden is at the top, followed by Norway, Finland and Iceland, while Yemen is at the bottom of the list.
The survey was conducted by scholars from Harvard and the London Business School. They measured the gap between men and women according to economic participation and opportunity, educational attainment, political empowerment, and health and survival.
Of Croatia's neighbours, Slovenia was ranked 53rd, Hungary 57th, and Italy 77th.
