ZAGREB, Nov 20 (Hina) - Croatian Foreign Minister Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic in Vancouver on Sunday addressed an international forum of the child about Croatia's activities in this area and underlined the need to raise awareness of children's rights, the ministry said in a press release on Monday.

The minister recalled the anniversaries of the UN Declaration and Convention on the Rights of the Child, saying they had provided an international framework for the protection of children's human rights.

Grabar-Kitarovic said Croatia had undertaken comprehensive reforms in children's rights over the past five years, and presented the law against family violence and the independent children's ombudsman.

She said Croatia had participated in the UN secretary-general's study on violence against children presented a year ago, adding that Croatia's legislation reflected the recommendations from the study.

Grabar-Kitarovic said Croatia was among 16 countries in the world in which the law prohibits the physical punishment of children.

She also said the Croatian government and nongovernmental organisations were raising awareness of violence against and among children, such as UNICEF's "Stop violence among children" campaign, which has been implemented in more than 220 Croatian schools.
