The head of the Council for the Protection of Market Competition, Olgica Spevec, said that last year the Agency had processed 239 cases, including the gravest breaches of market competition rules.
Spevec advocated amending the existing system of prosecution of unlawful market conduct in light of the fact that court fines in such cases were only symbolic.
Clubs of deputies supported the report, underlining the Agency's efficiency in improving the culture of market competition in difficult conditions.
They pointed to a long and inefficient procedure of punishing unlawful market conduct and supported the expansion of the Agency's powers to make its decisions effective immediately upon adoption.
Nevenka Majdenic of the ruling HDZ party said that the Agency's efficiency was the best in detecting cases of market concentration.
The Agency established 31 such cases, of which 18 referred to electronic media. There was less than one percent of unlawful market concentration cases, which is around the EU average, Majdenic said.
