Irregularities in privatisation fall within remit of judiciary - Sanader

ZAGREB, Nov 15 (Hina) - Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader has said that tackling irregularities in the process of privatisation in 1990s falls within the remit of the judiciary rather than politics.
ZAGREB, Nov 15 (Hina) - Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader has said that tackling irregularities in the process of privatisation in 1990s falls within the remit of the judiciary rather than politics.

In response to a question by Croatian Party of Rights MP Anto Djapic who asked when the government was going to implement the parliament's conclusions on addressing irregularities in privatisation and enabling the judiciary to confiscate property illegally gained during the privatisation process, Sanader said during Question Time in parliament on Wednesday that this was not within the remit of the government but within the remit of independent judiciary and institutions of a law-based country.

"I am also interested why institutions of the judicial branch of the authority are not addressing that," the PM said appealing on such institutions to do their job.

During Question Time PM Sanader added that the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) was proud of all what it had done during 1990s when it was in power for three terms in office.

Sanader, who is the HDZ chief, said this in response to the question by Antun Kapraljevic of the Croatian People's Party (HNS) who asked whether he was intending to apologise to citizens for "all the evil which the HDZ inflicted on them".

Kapraljevic holds that it was the HDZ that enabled crime in the ownership transformation and other criminal acts which impoverished the country and citizens.

Sanader reiterated that the crime had no political pre-modifier and it was not politicians but voters who would comment on what parties did while they were in power.
