Minister believes in successful clampdown on drug smugglers and dealers

ZAGREB, Nov 15 (Hina) - Croatian Interior Minister Ivica Kirin has refuted claims by deputy Ruza Tomasic of the Croatian Party of Rights (HSP) that the police were losing a battle against drug smugglers and dealers due to a lack of competent staff and equipment.

During Question Time at the start of the 23rd session of the Sabor on Wednesday morning, Tomasic wondered how the minister could expect a successful clampdown on drug dealers and smugglers if the Interior Ministry had only 170 police officers trained for this job, and if the government allocated only 60 million kuna for that purpose annually.

Reacting to her claims, Kirin said that in cooperation with their colleagues from neighbouring countries, the Croatian police were fighting a successful battle against drug smugglers, and he announced that the police would invest more efforts in the future to prevent this crime.

According to him, the Ministry will soon announce vacancies for 200 criminologists and for some 600 policemen whose task would be to monitor the border and ports.

Asked by a Croatian Democratic Union parliamentarian how the police were planning to enhance their efficiency, Kirin said that the AFIS (Automated Fingerprint Identification System) would be put into operation in Croatia today.

In this context the minister described this system as one of the world's best, adding that only the FBI had a better one.

The minister said that the police data base with DNA data was also among the best in Europe.
