Mesic says EC objections should encourage Croatia to continue with progress

ZAGREB, Nov 8 (Hina) - The objections made by the European Commission in a progress report on Croatia that is expected to be issued later in the day will not slow down Croatia's efforts to become a full member of the European Union, Croatian President Stjepan Mesic said in Zagreb on Wednesday.

The objections should be treated as plus points, a warning that we should not become complacent and that we should step up reforms and efforts to adopt and implement European legislation, Mesic said on the margins of a Croatian-Cypriot business forum in the Croatian capital.

He went on to say that the adoption of laws was easy, but that their implementation was difficult. In negotiations with the European Union, however, everything depends on us, the President said.

Croatia has employed instruments in the struggle against corruption and I believe in the success of that struggle, Mesic said.

In the progress report which the EC will publish today, Croatia is urged to continue with the progress it has made so far and to accelerate reforms in key areas such as the judiciary, the public administration, the economy, and the fight against corruption.
