Speaking at the ceremony, held at the Croatian National Theatre, PM Ivo Sanader said that Croatia had to be based on knowledge if it wanted to be competitive in globalisation processes. He recalled that the construction of university campuses was under way in major Croatian cities and that the entire project amounted to some two billion kuna.
The ceremony at the HNK was attended by government ministers, the Mayor of Zagreb and representatives of foreign universities, the diplomatic corps, and the judiciary.
Legal experts from Croatian and European universities and President Stjepan Mesic attended the presentation of a draft national strategy and an action plan for the modernisation of legal education in Croatia, held at the Law Faculty.
President Mesic said that democracy and the accomplishment of strategic goals was impossible without the legal profession.
Croatia has been recognised as a safe country, but it has some problems, Mesic said, expressing support for attempts to improve legal education.
President Mesic presented law professor Mirjan Damaska with a high state decoration for his contribution to science.
Events marking the 230th anniversary of the Law Faculty will continue with a two-day international conference on global legal trends.
