ZAGREB, Oct 25 (Hina) - Croatian Foreign Affairs and European Integration Minister Kolinda Grabar Kitarovic on Wednesday held a lecture for juniors and seniors of the Zagreb Faculty of Political Sciences on the topic "Croatia and the United Nations - New Challenges".

Recalling that on 22 May 1992 Croatia entered the World Organisation as its 178 member-state, the minister said that after being a recipient of UN-led peace keepers, Croatia was now participating in 11 out of the 18 UN peace missions worldwide.

Croatia has so far incorporated all of the 12 key UN conventions in its legislation and another 13 conventions are in the process of being ratified by the Sabor.

Croatia is also a member in 13 commissions, committees and programmes from the UN system.

According to the minister, one of the greatest challenges of Croatia's foreign policy is Zagreb's candidature for non-permanent membership of the Security Council in the 2008-2009 period.

"This respectable and responsible post would enable Croatia to strengthen its position in the international community, and is complementary to our aspirations to enter the European Union and NATO," the minister said, adding that the election of Croatia in that UN body would confirm the country's leadership in southeastern Europe.

Commenting on plans for reforming the Security Council, she said that Croatia was advocating a more prominent role for eastern European countries through ensuring an additional place for that regional group in the Council.
