ZAGREB, Oct 23 (Hina) - The leader of the Islamic community in Croatia, Mufti Sevko Omerbasic, on Monday morning led religious ceremonies in the Zagreb mosque to celebrate the end of Ramadan Month and the greatest holiday Ramadan Bayram.

Addressing the faithful, the dignitary said that everybody had to recall the previous holy month of fasting and prayer which brought about peace, solidarity and self-confidence among believers.

Omerbasic also expressed regret at having seen that during the holy month for Muslims, media commented variously on Qur'an, with some carrying negative statements about the Book of God. Furthermore, some theologians were engaged in the debates, although they are not acquainted very well with the Book, he added.

Omerbasic said that over the past years the Islamic community had been enjoying great moral authority, which it had earned by diligently promoting the Islamic faith and offering help to everybody who needed it.

"I regard as very positive the fact that inside the Islamic community we can hear criticism about its work, particularly the work of its leaders," Omerbasic said, adding that he also wondered whether objective criticism indicated that the Islamic community did not get along very well in democracy.

The dignitary called on the community to be open and transparent to all of its members so as to get positive reactions from believers and members.

He also read out messages with best wishes sent on this occasion by the leader of the Islamic community in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Mustafa Ceric, as well as letters by Croatia's top officials and the Roman Catholic Primate, Cardinal Josip Bozanic.

Muslims in major Croatian cities celebrated this holiday with religious services on Monday morning.
