EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg on Tuesday adopted a report of EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana and EU enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn on objectives the EU wants to achieve in Bosnia.
One of the EU's short-term goals is an efficient transfer of powers from the Office of the High Representative to Bosnian authorities. EU also underlined as a short-term priority assistance in overcoming backlogs in the police reform and other reforms necessary for the signing of a Stabilisation and Association Agreement (SAA) with the Union, as well as constitutional changes.
The EU said its medium-term goals were supporting Bosnia's drawing closer to the bloc through the implementation of the SAA and building efficient state structures necessary for European integration processes.
On the long-term plan, the EU plans to help build a stable, sustainable, peaceful and multiethnic Bosnia-Herzegovina which cooperates with its neighbours on a irreversible path to European associations.
The future role of the EU special envoy will be expanded, but different from the role of the UN High Representative.
The EU and its special representative in Bosnia will focus on political and security issues, including the implementation of peace agreements.
