This was the last of four identical ships Uljanik built as part of the so-called Caspian Programme. Each ship was named after the capital of Dagestan, a port on the Caspian Sea.
Each ship may carry 52 wagons and is part of the modernised Russian fleet which transports oil, oil products and gas across the Caspian Sea.
Each ship has a deadweight of 5,946 tonnes, is 143 metres long and 17 meters wide, and can sail at 14.1 knots.
A contract for the building of the ships was signed in April 2003. The Makhachkala 4 was launched in June this year.
This was the 52nd ship Uljanik built for Russia and the former Soviet Union.
Today's delivery was the fifth of the six planned in Uljanik for this year.
