After Italy revoked a restriction in April under which only Croatian citizens with a residence permit could purchase real estate in Italy, Croatia decided to revoke the same restriction for Italians in accordance with the principle of reciprocity, senior ministry officials said.
Minister Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic told the press the ministry would send a note to the Italian government on Thursday informing them of the new situation.
However, the note will read that Croatia retains the right to reconsider the decision if practice will show that Italy does not honour the right of Croatian citizens to freely acquire ownership of real estate, the minister added.
The ministry underlined that the decision referred solely to private persons and their real estate, and not state-owned land or real estate in national parks or protected areas.
Croatia has agreed the reciprocity principle in various forms with 21 European Union member states, without restrictions with most states.
