Attending the ceremony in Butmir outside Sarajevo was the NATO commander for South Europe, Admiral Harry Ulrich.
In a brief speech, Wightman announced the continuation of assistance to the Bosnian army in integrating and achieving NATO standards with a view to joining the alliance as soon as possible.
NATO headquarters was established in Sarajevo two years ago after the termination of the NATO-led Stabilisation Force mission, which was succeeded by a similar European Union mission, EUFOR.
EUFOR's 6,500 troops are in charge of peacekeeping and security, while the NATO headquarters concentrates on defence reform, the arrest of war crimes indictees, and counterterrorism.
