Ljubicic was flown on Friday from the ICTY Detention Unit in the Hague district of Scheveningen to Sarajevo, where he was placed in the custody of Bosnian judicial police.
Ljubicic surrendered to the ICTY in November 2001 after years of hiding. In April 2006 the tribunal decided to refer his case to the State Court of Bosnia-Herzegovina despite opposition from the defence and the accused himself.
During the 1992-1995 Bosnian war, Ljubicic commanded the 4th Military Police Battalion of the Croatian Defence Council (HVO), which was based in the central town of Vitez.
Ljubicic is charged with involvement in the expulsion of Bosnian Muslims from the Busovaca and Vitez areas in 1992 and 1993. He is alleged to have taken part in killing 116 Muslim civilians in the village of Ahmici in April 1993.
