Bishop says property of Catholic Church and faithful in northwest Bosnia often attacked

SARAJEVO, Oct 4 (Hina) - Banja Luka Roman Catholic Bishop Franjo Komarica has urged the police in the Bosnian Serb entity to take more decisive measures to prevent increasingly frequent attacks against the property and facilities of the Catholic Church and the remaining Catholics in the Republic of Srpska.

The Bosnian Roman Catholic news agency (KTA) on Wednesday carried a letter which the dignitary sent to the Banja Luka police chief, Zeljko Spasojevic, informing him about a series of recent incidents and attacks aimed against the Catholic Church and faithful in the Banja Luka area (northwestern Bosnia).

"The local police have failed to identify and catch the perpetrators and they have never brought them to justice. This creates an ugly image of the police that condone incidents and protect those who inflict damage to others," Komarica wrote to the police chief.

He cited examples of the destruction of crops in the fields owned by local villagers, looting of fruit and vegetables and demolition of fences.

The bishop cautions that such incidents have negative implications for the feeling of security among returnees.
