According to the Associated Press, "the tiny ex-Yugoslav state, which in June became the world's newest independent country, said the 6,500 member force which it inherited from its now defunct union with Serbia, will be downsized with the abolishing of the draft."
"All soldiers now serving their compulsory 6-months military service in Montenegro will be allowed home by Sept. 5," military officials were quoted by the AP as saying.
Montenegro has also officially applied for membership in NATO's Partnership for Peace program.
