FAZANA, Aug 18 (Hina) - Photographs of the late Croatian president Franjo Tudjman, the current president Stjepan Mesic and the late Yugoslav communist leader Josip Broz Tito, displayed as part of an open-air exhibition in the northern Adriatic town of Fazana, have been vandalised.

Tudjman had a swastika drawn on his forehead, Tito's face was partly scratched out, while Mesic's photograph was crumpled, as if somebody tried to tear it down, the head of the local tourist board, Melita Perkovic, told reporters on Friday. She expressed regret over this act of vandalism.

Eight portraits of statesmen and four portraits of world-famous persons who had visited the nearby islands of Brijuni were put on show on the waterfront promenade in Fazana as part of a theme exhibition.

Istria Police Department spokesman Robert Pavlekovic said that an investigation was underway.
