An unofficial source in the government made a few false statements, Ronko, a member of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), told reporters on Friday.
The county prefect said that it was not true that the county's debt amounted to a mere 57 million kuna, as claimed by the government source.
"Franjo Lucic, a county leader from the Croatian Democratic Union, has confirmed that the debt amounts to 355 million kuna," Ronko said, adding that at the time he came to power the debt was 290 million, with blocked assets amounting to 60 million, and the county road management company gone bankrupt.
"For three years in a row the state auditor had been warning that the Pozega County was having serious problems, county councillors urged stopping (the former prefect) Bagaric, but to no avail," Ronko said.
Commenting on claims by the government source that problems would have been solved if he had talked to the creditor, Ronko said that the source failed to mention that the county accounts had been blocked before he took over the post.
Ronko said that he sent the audit findings today to government spokesman Ratko Macek, who he believes made the false statements about the county's debt.
