VUKOVAR, July 31 (Hina) - The swimming season on the islet called Vukovarska Ada on the Danube River near the eastern Croatian town of Vukovar was opened again after 16 years.

Before the war this was one of the favourite summer bathing places on the islet large some 1000 hectares and mainly covered by woods.

During the aggression against Croatia in the early 1990s, the then Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) took over control of the islet.

The summer swimming season was officially reopened by representatives of Croatia's Vukovar-Sirmium County and of Bac District in the northern Serbian province of Vojvodina

After several months of talks, the authorities of the Croatian county and the Vojvodina district agreed on a simplified regime for passing the border line on the Danube.

Swimmers can go to Vukovarska Ada every day from 0700 to 2000 hrs without being checked at the border crossings Vukovar (Croatia) and Vajska (Serbia). The season runs until 15 September.

On this occasion, the mayor of Vukovar, Tomislav Sota, and the mayor of the Vojvodina municipality of Bac, Tomislav Bogunovic, reiterated their commitment to normalising bilateral relations on the basis of cross-border cooperation.
