After the dinner Mesic told the press that informal meetings such as this one on Brijuni "are useful as we open space towards one another" particularly when it comes to cooperation in European integration processes.
Commenting on Croatia's relations with its neighbour Slovenia, that is an EU member, Mesic said that every problem can be settled in a civilised fashion when parties in concern sit at the table and agree on models for the settlement of outstanding issues. He expressed hope that the governments of Croatia and Slovenia would follow this suit and clarify misunderstandings that burden relations between what he said the two friendly countries.
Commenting on a possible trilateral meeting by heads of state of Italy, Slovenia and Croatia at which they would pay tribute to the victims from the Second World War, Mesic and Slovenia's Drnovsek said they were expecting Italian President Giorgio Napolitano to make a move in this respect.
According to Drnovsek, Italy has not yet reached a level of maturity for such a meeting.
Both Mesic and Drnovsek added that they had been prepared for already two years to attend such a meeting, which meant, they said, that it was on the Italian side to make the necessary step so that all the sides could take over their share of responsibility for WW II victims.
Asked by reporters to comment on the Serb Radical Party leader Tomislav Nikolic's statement that if necessary, Serbia could defend Kosovo by arms, Slovene President Drnovsek said that "arms and such statements in countries - successors to the former (Socialist) Yugoslavia are a past".
We talk about what is the present and what will be the future and such statements are out of place. I am sure that Serbia will embark on the road on which Slovenia and Croatia as well as other former Yugoslav republics are already, the Slovene head of state added.
Asked by reporters to comment on Friday's agreement signed by judicial officials of Croatia and Montenegro on cooperation in the prosecution of war criminals, Montenegro's Vujanovic described the treaty as exceptionally positive.
The agreement proves good communication between Croatia and Montenegro, he added.
