Detention requested again for war crimes suspect Glavas

ZAGREB, July 27 (Hina) - Following the recent rejection of a request to place independent member of parliament Branimir Glavas in custody, the State Prosecutor's Office on Thursday once again requested that he be detained on suspicion of influencing witnesses, on the basis of new evidence.

The request to detain Glavas, suspected of war crimes against Serb civilians in the eastern city of Osijek in 1991, was submitted by the Zagreb County Prosecutor's Office to the investigating judge of Zagreb's County Court.

The State Prosecutor's Office said on its web site that a report submitted by the Osijek County police yesterday provided grounds to suspect concrete influence on witnesses.

The report brings new facts and evidence which were not considered when the first detention request was made, said the Office, without giving details from the report.

The State Prosecutor's Office first requested that Glavas be placed in custody on July 20 on suspicion that he influenced future witnesses by publishing minutes from the investigation proceedings against him.

The Zagreb's County Court investigating judge turned down the request as well as an appeal against the rejection lodged by the State Prosecutor's Office, saying the suspect did not obstruct the investigation and that there was no justified reason to put him in custody.
