ZAGREB, July 25 (Hina) - The Croatian Journalists Association (HND) has most vehemently condemned pressure on Jutarnji List daily and Croatian Radio correspondent Vitomir Peric by Velibor Milosevic, president of Sinj's branch of the Social Democratic Party and an official of the ruling coalition in the town 20 km north of the southern seaport of Split.

The HND said in a statement on Tuesday that Milosevic was trying to intimidate Peric since the discovery of manipulation with ballots at the last election convention of the SDP's Sinj branch.

The statement said that although all Croatian media reported about the manipulation case, only Peric was subjected to daily threats on Milosevic's part, even in public, although his reports were fully in keeping with journalistic standards.

The HND and its local county branch called on law enforcement and other relevant authorities to finally take decisive action to stop the attacks.

Split police spokeswoman Marina Kraljevic-Gudelj confirmed that Peric had reported having received anonymous death threats over the phone. She said the police put the journalist under surveillance for two days but called it off because he did not press charges.
