Joras gives Croatia until Thursday to remove flower stands from border

PLOVANIJA, July 24 (Hina) - Controversial Slovene citizen Josko Joras's attorney on Monday handed the chief of border police at the Croatian-Slovene border crossing Plovanija a decision by a court in Piran, Slovenia, under which Croatia is obliged to remove flower stands which the Croatian police last April put across Joras's illegal dirt road across the border.

Under the decision, Croatia had to remove the flower stands by July 1, but Joras's attorney Danijel Starman told Croatian reporters today that "the Slovene side" set July 27 as the final deadline.

Mentioning also the Lebanon, Starman said "the Slovene side" did not want the use of force and that it would inform European bodies as well as the European and the world public in case the final deadline was not complied with.

Answering questions from the press as to what the police intended to do by Thursday, Croatian Interior Ministry spokesman Zlatko Mehun said over the phone the task of the police was to ensure undisturbed crossing of the border and prevent any illegal crossing, and that it would act accordingly.

Croatia put up the concrete flower stands on the dirt road which Joras built to get around the border crossing and avoid border control. Joras subsequently sued Croatia with Piran's District Court. He lives on the Croatian side of the border but considers this area Slovene territory.
