Netherlands extradites runaway war criminal to Croatia

ZAGREB, June 25 (Hina) - Munib Suljic, one of the convicts in the Pakracka Poljana case, was extradited by the Dutch authorities to Croatia on Sunday, a source at the Ministry of the Interior said.
ZAGREB, June 25 (Hina) - Munib Suljic, one of the convicts in the Pakracka Poljana case, was extradited by the Dutch authorities to Croatia on Sunday, a source at the Ministry of the Interior said.

"The Croatian police took over from the Dutch police and transferred to the Croatian judiciary Munib Suljic, who was sentenced to 12 years in prison for killing a man in Pakracka Poljana in 1991," ministry spokesman Zlatko Mehun told Hina this afternoon.

Suljic arrived in Zagreb around 1.30 pm aboard a regular flight from Amsterdam, escorted by a member of the Zagreb Interpol office. He was transferred to a prison hospital due to his condition, Mehun said.

Mehun added that he could not comment on Suljic's condition, saying that it was within the jurisdiction of physicians.

The Zagreb County Court on 15 September 2005 sentenced Suljic to 10 years in prison for killing a man in Pakracka Poljana near the village Janja Lipa in 1991. Suljic was in a group of five former police reservists guilty of murdering a man and of unlawful detention and extortion of three Serb men from Zagreb in 1991.

The Supreme Court increased Suljic's sentence by two years and the verdict became final on May 10 this year.

Suljic, who defended himself without being detained, disappeared on the eve of sentencing and the police issued an international warrant for his arrest.

He was arrested in The Hague on June 1 and was in a Dutch prison hospital since then due to health problems.
