ZAGREB, July 21 (Hina) - Police in Zagreb have confiscated 2,393 counterfeit banknotes of 500 euros, the largest amount of fake euros seized in Europe since the euro went into circulation.

Three men were caught while selling the counterfeit money to an undercover investigator in Zagreb, chief of police Marijan Benko told a news conference in the Croatian capital on Friday.

A total of 1,196,500 counterfeit euros were seized during the operation dubbed "Indicative", which was carried out by the Croatian police in cooperation with their Austrian colleagues and the Croatian Office for the Suppression of Organised Crime (USKOK) and Europol.

The suspects include one Montenegrin citizen, one citizen of Bosnia-Herzegovina, and one with dual Croatian and Bosnian citizenship. They were brought before an investigating judge and were remanded in custody.

Benko said that 255,000 fake euros had been sold, adding that the police were continuing the operation to find out where the counterfeit banknotes were printed.

The gang was discovered after the Austrian police had received information that persons from former Yugoslavia were planning to put over 1.5 million euros into circulation in several countries, Austrian police official Rudolf Unterkuefler said at the press conference.
