The plenary session focusing on plans for EU expansion to the Mediterranean countries, Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova was held in the Livadia Palace where Franklin D. Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and Joseph Stalin had held a famous conference in 1945.
"We strongly support the EU expansion as we believe in the idea of Euro-Atlantism," the Croatian premier said, reiterating his position that Europe must complete its project of unification.
Commenting on relations between the EU and Ukraine, Sanader said that both sides had their tasks: the EU should carry out its action plan on a partnership with the former Soviet republic until 2007, and Ukraine should continue the process of democratisation, establish market economy and counter corruption.
With regard to the relations between his country and the European Union, Sanader said that Croatia was already "one foot in the EU."
As part of the conference, Sanader met with Elmar Brook, the chairman of the European Union's foreign affairs committee.
Sanader told reporters that the support of the European Parliament would be very important for Croatia in its bid to join the Union.
The final speech at the conference was given by Croatian Culture Minister Bozo Biskupic, who underlined the importance of culture in European unification and enlargement processes.
