ZAGREB, July 6 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic on Thursday received Hikmet Cetin, NATO's civil representative to Afghanistan, who said during their talks that he very much appreciated Croatia's contribution to the NATO-led mission in that country, the President's Office said in a statement.

Cetin said he considered Croatia's contribution very important in its efforts to join NATO. He expressed his conviction that Croatia's membership of NATO was in the interests of both the alliance and the European Union, adding that admission of Croatia and other countries in the region to the two blocs would contribute to stability and security in Europe.

Cetin informed his host about the situation in Afghanistan, saying that despite the significant democratic progress that had been achieved in the past four years the country was still facing major challenges and problems regarding security, economic development and narcotics production.

The two officials agreed that education and economic progress were preconditions for combating global terrorism.
