SDA chief says Merkel encouraging efforts to set up new Bosnian government

SARAJEVO, Jan 24 (Hina) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel is trying to encourage efforts to establish the new government in Bosnia and Herzegovina through bilateral talks with Bosnian political parties' leaders, the leader of the (Bosniak) Party of Democratic Action (SDA), Sulejman Tihic, was quoted by the Sarajevo-based Oslobodjenje paper as saying on Monday.

Tihic and SDA official Bakir Izetbegovic, who sits in Bosnia's tripartite presidency as the Bosniak representative, held talks with Merkel in Berlin last week.

The German chancellor is expected to receive Bosnian Social Democratic Party (SDP) leader, Zlatko Lagumdzija, Bosnian Serb President Milorad Dodik, who is at the helm of the SNSD party, and Croatian Democratic Union of Bosnia and Herzegovina (HDZ BiH) leader Dragan Covic next week.

"The main aim of the meetings in Berlin is to do something to initiate changes in the constitutional and political system which will enable Bosnia and Herzegovina to meet membership criteria for the European Union and NATO more quickly," Tihic said.

Merkel was interested to see when Bosnia would get the new government which could then begin implementing such tasks. The German Chancellor has no intention of influencing the establishment of a future ruling coalition, he added.

Bosnia's political parties still seem far from reaching agreement on a future ruling coalition although general elections were held on 3 October 2010.

Engaged in a battle to ensure the necessary majority are one bloc consisting of the SDP, the SDA and two Croat parties -- the HSP and a party led by the businessmen Lijanovic brothers -- and one bloc including another two Croatian parties -- the HDZ BiH and the HDZ 1990 - which enjoy the support of major Bosnian Serb parties.

Last week, HDZ BiH leader Covic held talks in Berlin with Chancellor Merkel's foreign affairs and security advisor Christoph Heusgen.

After the talks, Covic told the Bosnian media that Germany would like to help stabilise the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina and support the efforts of the entire region to join the European Union.

"Germany's intention is to contribute to Bosnia and Herzegovina's stability and to its efforts to integrate into Euro-Atlantic institutions, which is in the interest of the entire region," Covic was quoted by Bosnian media as saying on Saturday.
