This 13th century Romanesque triple nave basilica was built on the site of an early Christian oratory and had undergone several architectural transformations over time. An improper restoration in the 1960s had led to the cathedral falling into an extreme state of disrepair that threatened the continuance of its liturgical function.
Multidisciplinary restoration works were carried out from 1999 to 2005. The reconstruction project was made by the Croatian Culture Ministry.
