Minister Rupel reiterates Slovene position on border dispute with Croatia

LJUBLJANA, June 10 (Hina) - Slovene Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel has said he hopes that the problems about the border demarcation with Croatia will be solved before the start of 2008 when Slovenia is expected to take over the six-month rotating chairmanship of the European Union.

"Slovenia is not intending to take advantage of its position as an EU chair in any thing, including in its relations with Croatia. We, however, have always, warned that the European context requires seriousness and credibility from everybody. In this sense we expect Croatia to be fully credible in its policy and conduct," Rupel said in his interview which the Slovene paper 'Vecer' published in its issue on Saturday.

Rupel admitted that Slovenia and Croatia should not be blamed for the problem of the border demarcation which he said stemmed from the disintegration of the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (ICTY).

He went on to say that the boundary line between Socialist republics, as constituent parts of the Yugoslav federation, had never been defined in detail. However, since it gained its independence, Croatia has made several unilateral moves which have to some extent been against Slovene interests, the Slovene minister added.

As regards Croatia's suggestion about going to international arbitration in order to settle the border dispute, Slovenia has in principle nothing against it, but it is not in favour of losing time now when it is preparing for taking over the EU presidency, Rupel said explaining the fact that Ljubljana seems not to be in the mood of resorting to the international arbitration.
