Croatian parliamentary parties back proposed agreement with Slovenia on illegal migrants

ZAGREB, May 17 (Hina) - Croatia is achieving increasingly better results in preventing illegal border entries, Interior Ministry state secretary Ivica Buconjic said in Parliament on Wednesday while presenting a proposal for the ratification of an agreement with Slovenia on the handover and reception of persons caught crossing the border illegally.

Buconjic said that the Croatian border police, despite a rise in illegal migrations, were more and more efficient in capturing illegal migrants.

The proposed agreement provides for procedures to be followed in the case of persons found to be crossing the border or staying in Croatia or Slovenia illegally.

According to Buconjic, last year 1,747 persons were caught in an attempt to cross the Croatian border with Slovenia illegally, and Slovenia handed over 1,827 such persons to Croatia. In the first three months of 2006, the Croatian border police arrested 418 illegal migrants attempting to enter Slovenia, and Slovenia sent back 458 persons after finding that they had entered the country illegally from Croatia.

The agreement was backed by all parliamentary parties.
