SAARBRUECKEN, May 30 (Hina) - Croatia wants to follow the example of the German federal state of Saarland, which has transformed its economy from one based on heavy industry to a knowledge-based economy, Croatian Economy Minister Branko Vukelic said during a visit to the capital of Saarland, Saarbruecken, on Tuesday.

Croatia is interested in Saarland's experience in starting new businesses, linking knowledge and the economy, and establishing and managing clusters, Vukelic said at a news conference after meeting Saarland's Economy Minister Hanspeter Georgi.

Minister Georgi said that since 2001 every fourth job in Saarland was one opened in a new company.

Vukelic said that Croatia and Saarland shared many similarities, the most important one being that their economies were small but dynamic and oriented towards knowledge.

Before meeting Georgi, Vukelic and his associates presented Croatia's potential to Saarland's business people at a forum organised by the Saarland Chamber of Industry and Commerce.

Attending the event were also representatives of 25 regional companies, who held meetings with representatives of seven Croatian companies.

Croatian business people also met business people from the neighbouring federal state Rhineland-Palatinate and from France, Luxembourg and Belgium.

The Croatian delegation was also due to visit the Voelklingen ironworks, a monument under UNESCO's protection.

Croatian exports to Saarland in 2005 amounted to 6.23 million euros, while Saarland's exports to Croatia were 27.67 million euros.
