Hungarians sue Croatia over housing demolition

ZADAR, May 19 (Hina) - Hungarian owners of facilities on the Croatian island of Vir which have been demolished or are being demolished filed five lawsuits with the Zadar Municipal Court against the Republic of Croatia on Friday.
ZADAR, May 19 (Hina) - Hungarian owners of facilities on the Croatian island of Vir which have been demolished or are being demolished filed five lawsuits with the Zadar Municipal Court against the Republic of Croatia on Friday.

The court president Marijan Bitanga said the Hungarians insisted in their law action that the court proclaim as illegal and ban the ongoing demolition drive performed by the Croatian Ministry of Construction and Environment Protection.

Bitanga added that the court would most probably consider the lawsuits and make a decision after the weekend.

The ministry continued the demolition drive on Friday when illegally built houses on three sites were torn down.

Close to 10,000 houses have been built illegally on this central Adriatic island in the last several years. They are owned by Croatians, Hungarians, Slovenes and Bosnians. The Ministry of Construction and Environmental Protection will tear down facilities built in the protected strip 70 meters from the sea.

Against a backdrop of vociferous opposition of Hungarian owners to the Croatian Ministry's operation, Hungarian Ambassador to Croatia Laszlo Mohai told Hungarian radio Kossuth on Friday that the Hungarian-owned houses envisaged for demolition did not have the necessary permits.

"As in Hungary, if you want to build something you must have all the necessary permits," said Mohai.

He added that neither the houses built before 2004, when a law declaring a protected strip of land within 70 metres of the sea was passed, nor the houses built after that had the necessary permits.

As for houses envisaged for demolition, Mohai said they met both criteria, namely they were built after 2004 and are situated in the protected strip.
