ZAGREB, May 17 (Hina) - A request for an investigation of Branimir Glavas and Krunoslav Fehir on suspicion of war crimes was submitted to the Zagreb County Court on Wednesday, which said that the County Prosecutor's Office did not request detention for the two suspects.

Court spokesman and investigating judge Kresimir Devcic told Hina he did not expect Glavas and Fehir to be interviewed in the next two weeks.

The case was given to investigating judge Zdenko Posavec.

Devcic declined to say what Glavas and Fehir were charged with, saying only that the county prosecutor suggested forensic evaluation and the interrogation of some 40 witnesses.

The media have recently said that Glavas is charged with ordering the killing and torture of Serb civilians, specifically that he is responsible for the maltreatment and killing of Cedomir Vuckovic and Djordje Petkovic, whose body has not yet been found, and for the torture of Nikola Vasic and Snezana Beric.

According to the media, Fehir is charged with torturing Vuckovic. Fehir and another soldier allegedly forced Vuckovic to drink battery acid, after which Fehir shot him.

Glavas and Fehir are allegedly charged with war crimes against civilians under the Criminal Code which was in force until 1998.

After interviewing the suspects, judge Posavec has to decide whether to launch an investigation against them or disagree with the request for an investigation. In the latter case, the decision on the request will be made by a Zagreb County Court panel of judges.

Under a decision of the president of the Supreme Court, proceedings against independent member of parliament Glavas and Fehir, a former member of the First Osijek Battalion, whose commander in 1991 was Glavas, was transferred from Osijek to Zagreb so as to avert any pressure on witnesses.

Parliament stripped Glavas of immunity last week, thus making it possible to launch criminal proceedings against him on suspicion that he committed war crimes against civilians in 1991.

Glavas has dismissed all the accusations, stating that these are politically motivated proceedings against him.
