SARAJEVO, May 10 (Hina) - Bosnia and Herzegovina Defence Minister Nikola Radovanovic confirmed on Wednesday that the country had exported arms to Iraq, but said that it had been a legal sale of arms and ammunition for the requirements of the Iraqi armed forces.

Commenting on an Amnesty International report about alleged transfers of arms to Iraq, Radovanovic said that over the last year Bosnia sold to Iraq a little under 200,000 infantry weapons and 28 million pieces of ammunition for them.

"The sale was carried out in accordance with procedures envisaged by the law," he said, adding that the transaction had been completely legitimate.

"I cannot comment on assumptions of whether it ended in the right hands," said Radovanovic.

The Bosnian Defence Ministry issued a statement reiterating the minister's data about the weapons sold to Iraq and saying that the deal had been realised in line with valid Bosnian laws and under the supervision of the former NATO-led Stabilisation Force.

"It is known that the control of import and export of weaponry and military equipment is carried out by the Bosnian Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations, while the Foreign Ministry, the Security Ministry and the Defence Ministry give their consent in accordance with their powers," read the statement.

The Defence Ministry underlined that mechanisms of control of import and export of weaponry and military equipment had improved significantly in recent years, thus reducing the possibility of illegal trade.
