Franjo Tudjman, Gojko Susak, the current President Stjepan Mesic and the entire Croatian government are accused, Michael Karnavas, the lawyer who represents Jadranko Prlic, told reporters in The Hague.
Karnavas said he was surprised at the inactivity of the Croatian government regarding the trial of Prlic and five other Bosnian Croat wartime political and military leaders, which opened today.
The government has done nothing other than paying lip service. If I were the Croatian government I would be much more active, he added.
In his opening statement, Prosecutor Kenneth Scott ascribed the bulk of the blame for the crimes committed during an ethnic cleansing campaign in Croat-controlled areas of Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1993/94 to the late Croatian president Franjo Tudjman and his policies aimed at dividing Bosnia-Herzegovina. The prosecutor described the six accused as mere executors of the policies dictated by the authorities in Zagreb.
