At the moment it is certain to say that negotiations would be opened for the science and research chapter. After the screening (a thorough analysis of the adjustment of Croatia's legislation with that of the EU) of that chapter was completed, the European Commission recommended the opening of negotiations without conditions or "benchmarks".
It is difficult to say at the moment if another chapter would be ready for negotiations by 12 June, the sources in Brussels said. The European Commission also screened the education and culture chapter, but this chapter is still discussed at meetings of the Committee of Permanent Representatives of the EU member states (COREPER).
Croatia's EU entry talks were launched on 3 October 2005. So far, more than one third of the 35 acquis communautaire chapters underwent screening, and the entire procedure is expected to be completed by October 2006.
