Josipovic on news about letter from Bank for International Settlements

ZAGREB, Nov 15 (Hina) - President Ivo Josipovic has said that he must examine more carefully the news about a letter from the Basel-based Bank for International Settlements (BIS) about Croatia's request for its mediation in Croatia's dispute with Slovenia regarding foreign currency deposits of Croatian clients in the now defunct Slovenian bank Ljubljanska Banka.

During his visit to Split on Monday, he said that this matter would have to be returned in some way to bilateral talks with Slovenia as it was important that clients "don't lose their money".

Asked by reporters whether it would be good to consider the matter bilaterally again, Josipovic said that this was a new situation which should be analysed again.

Earlier on Monday, Croatian Foreign Minister Gordan Jandrokovic confirmed that Croatian authorities had received a letter from the BIS regarding the request that this bank mediate in the Croatian-Slovenian dispute on foreign currency deposits of Croatian clients in Ljubljanska Banka, saying that the government would first analyse the letter and then decide on steps to be taken.

"(Finance) Minister (Ivan) Suker has received the letter, we will see what exactly the message from Basel is and then decide on steps to be taken next," Jandrokovic told reporters after a government session.

The media have reported that BIS has rejected Croatia's request to act as a mediator in its dispute with Slovenia.
