Pasquier was quoted as saying that the stability of government "is deemed as an important factor in Croatia's progress towards the European Union".
The ambassador mentioned reports by some Croatian newspapers whose credibility he described as questionable.
Selem reassured the ambassador about "the absolute internal stability" of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), as well as the firmness of HDZ members of parliament and also of the firmness of the ruling coalition.
Pasquier said it was not his intention to interfere into Croatian internal affairs, but that he was interested in the consistency of the Croatian state policy in international affairs, according to the statement.
When it comes to the Croatian judicial system and policy chapter no. 23 "Judiciary and Fundamental Rights", which is part of EU accession negotiations, Pasquier said that the French government and he are not interested in individual cases but in the functioning of the legal system in Croatia.
Following the work of agencies from this system (including prosecutors, USKOK, courts etc.) he said he was assured that Croatia was growing into a really law-based state. In his opinion, there should be no doubts regarding Chapter 23.
"The problem which Croatia must solve is the issue of its shipyards," Pasquier said, expressing hope that the accession negotiations between Croatia and the EU would be completed by the summer of 2011.
