Arambasic had been sentenced in absentia to 20 years in prison for war crimes, the Croatian Justice Ministry said in a statement on Thursday.
"Mitar Arambasic has been sentenced in Croatia for crimes against humanity and the international law, for war crimes which he committed as a member of the militia unit of the ex paramilitary Serb statelet (SAO Krajina) - Martic's militia Otisic - in the period between 11 March 1991 and 4 August 1995," the ministry said in the statement.
Arambasic was sentenced by the Split County Court whose verdict was confirmed by the Supreme Court in the appeals process.
Upon his arrival in Croatia, Arambasic was taken to the Zagreb County Prison and later today he will be transferred to the prison in Split.
He was arrested in September 2002 in Sioux Falls in South Dakota following an international arrest warrant.
